The paintings on view here are the work of R. Mario (Ricky) Borgia, a conceptual artist and composer whose life’s passion is exploring the endless possibilities of art and music. Inspired by themes of connection, transformation, and beauty, these seven pieces aim to evoke reflection and a true sense of calm.
During the waning days of the pandemic, I was invited to participate in Tayler Brady’s Create and Connect gatherings at Studio18 Gallery in Clintonville. Each Tuesday evening, artists from across Central Ohio came together in an open studio environment to work on paintings, poems, and other creative expressions. This vibrant space offered a rare opportunity to experiment with trance painting—a process that allowed me to suspend objective reality and embrace pure, intuitive creation.
For ten weeks, I arrived with a blank 36×36” canvas and a randomly chosen, limited palette drawn from my “team of colors.” Each painting represents a moment in time where the colors, the canvas, and I intertwined, immersed in the collective vibrations of artists creating around me. Rather than directing the process, I became a sideman to the materials, letting them “jam” together in a spontaneous performance.
The music played a critical role in this creative synergy—drones, trance, and techno grooves set the tone for the evenings, blending seamlessly into the communal energy of the space. Within three hours, each blank canvas transformed into a bold expression of color, texture, and emotion, embodying the thrill of shared creativity and the power of community.
These paintings are not just works of art but vibrant reflections of a moment in time—alive with the spirit of collaboration and the joy of creation.
