Our Children’s Formation Director, Darien McCoy, submitted this project for families to do at home.

Since we aren’t able to welcome our children back until Oct. 10, I thought I would share a craft that you and your family can do that is inspired by our Gospel passage for this Sunday. The passage comes from Mark 9:38-50 and our craft is inspired by verse 50 that reads: “Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

Salt Play-Dough

You will need:

• Salt (Table salt)
• Flour
• Water
• Mixing spoon and bowl
• Measuring cup

Optional:

• Food coloring
• Storage bags
• Cookie Cutters
• Paints and paintbrushes

Steps:

1. Measure your dry ingredients. You will need to use a 1:2 ratio of salt to flour. For example, if you’re using ½ cup of salt then you will use double the amount of flour: 1 cup. Mix your salt and flour together.
2. Add just enough water to your mixture to create a dough that is knead-able. I would suggest adding a little at a time to your bowl.
3. If you would like to color your dough, now would be the time to add your food coloring.
4. Play with your dough! Create fun shapes, figures, or use cookie cutters! You can store this dough in a ziploc bag or in a plastic container to play with again and again. If you want to paint your creations then you can leave them out to air dry or bake them.
5. If you would like to bake them then preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit then bake them for about 1-2 hours. The baking time is determined on the thickness of your creation so I would keep an eye on it.
