As I painted last Saturday, I thought about how Moses, who reaches the border of the Promise Land but dies without entering it, is a stand-in for all of us. None of us will fully live into the future that we’re trying to make possible. The future is for our descendants, as it should be. So I painted Moses looking out on the mothers and babies who will populate the Promised Land. A simple painting, and probably not one of my best, reflecting a simple idea. But an idea that is powerful to me as I approach fifty in the midst of a pandemic and presidential election, with my heart full of hopes for the future and the recognition that I will only participate in a small part of that future.
